Following the increase in sexual and gender-based violence, as well as other social and environmental issues in Nigeria, the Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC, in collaboration with the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, ASUBEB, has commenced a two- day state level train the trainers workshop centred on general principles of environment, social safeguarding and other safeguarding measures.
Declaring the training workshop aimed at improving the social and environmental status of schools across the state open, the Executive Chairman of ASUBEB, Dr. Vera Nwadinobi, said that the training was also in line with the Healthy Living Initiative of Mrs Nonye Soludo to further educate the people, especially school children, on the benefits of living a healthy life.
She expressed joy that the Commission has integrated environmental and social safeguarding into its core activities and has chosen Anambra State as one of the beneficiaries of the programme, saying that the importance of safeguarding the immediate school environment cannot be overemphasized.
Dr. Nwadinobi posited that the sorrundings in which people live or in which they have their schools and other training facilities must be kept safe and maintained to ensure healthy living standards.
She expressed belief that the two-day training will provide guidance on how best to employ the general principles of environmental and social safeguarding to systematically manage unintended social and environmental impact such as gender-based violence.
The ASUBEB Chairman urged the participants to listen attentively to all the resources persons in order to step down the training in the various schools across the state.
In her remark, the leader, Anambra State Safeguard Team, Barrister Eucharia Ohuoha, said that the programme is to sensitize the participants on the need to be conscious of their environment at all times.
Paper presentations by the resource persons, Mrs Uzoma Akaeme, Kingsley Nlewedim, Chinenye Anyakora and Anakwe Theresa on Principles of Gender Based Violence, Introduction to Social and Environmental Safeguarding, Rules and Responsibilities of Stakeholders, as well as Grievance Redress Mechanism formed the highlights of the training workshop.
