The Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze, says the Eighth Assembly under his leadership has passed eleven out of the twenty-one bills presented before it in just one year of his leadership.
Right Honourable Udeze disclosed this while briefing journalists at the legislative complex in Awka, about the performances and achievements of the eighth Assembly since their inauguration on June 12, 2023.
House of Assembly Correspondent Emmanuel Chigbata reports that
the Speaker commended members of the eighth Assembly for their resolve and commitment towards the development of the state, regardless of party affiliations.
Right Honourable Udeze further disclosed that sixty-two motions and about seventy resolutions were considered within the review period, as according to him, out of the twenty-one bills, eleven were executive bills, while ten were private member bills, all crafted in the best interest of Ndi Anambra.
He noted that some of the challenges of the eighth Assembly included having twenty-three new members that are unfamiliar with legislative principles, which prompted the leadership to organize seminars within and outside the state to align them with the operations of the House.
The Speaker also disclosed that all the legislators work as a team with efforts geared towards serving the people of the state better and emphasized that there is a cordial working relationship with Governor Chukwuma Soludo and the entire Executive Arm of Government.
He noted that they are currently working on the issue of legislative autonomy, with the commission expected to be soon established and revealed that the House has set up a committee to review all laws passed in the last twenty years, while assuring that they will continue to make laws that serve the state’s best interests without being a rubber stamp Assembly.
