The building collapse site at Odu Igbo market, Ochanja and that of Dennis Memorial Grammar School, DMGS both in Onitsha, have been visited by the panel of inquiry set up to investigate the causes of the building collapse and make recommendation to avert future reoccurrence.

 

The panel, led by Engineer Victor Meju, first visited Odu Igbo market building collapse site, where an excavator was already clearing the debris on site and examined the ruin of the structure and took samples of the materials as well as interacted with those at the site.

Mr. Victor Orji, a senior staff of Onitsha South Local Government Area, who received the panel members, explained that if supervision of structures are left within the local government area for Urban areas like Onitsha, it will help in checking the problems of building collapse and emphasized need for the local government authorities to be carried along.

Later, the panel members arrived the Dennis Memorial Grammar School, DMGS Onitsha, where they went round the collapsed five story centenary building and assessed the level of damage and examined samples of the debris.

Engineer Meju in a remark, said the panel will get to the root cause of the collapse ,assuring that the panel was not out to victimise victimize anybody or group but will make useful recommendations that will help nip in the bud the problem of building collapse through strict adherence to building standards and codes.
