The President-General of Oko Peoples Union in Orumba North Local Government Area, Barrister Casmir Nwafor has called on the International Community, Federal and State Governments to come to the aid of Oko Community with a view to solving the age-long erosion menace which has continued to ravage the community.

 

According to a research by the International Erosion Control Association, Oko is one of the communities captured in the World Danger List with severe erosion threat.

 

Speaking to newsmen at the scene of a collapsed one story building at Eziabor Village in Oko due to erosion menace, Barrister Nwafor noted that though no life was lost, many people have been rendered homeless and property worth millions of Naira destroyed.

 

The Oko Community Town Union President-General called on the International Donor Agencies, Federal Emergency Management Agency, State Emergency Management Agency as well as Charitable Organizations to come to their rescue.

 

Barrister Nwafor who is also the Transition Committee Chairman of Orumba North Local Government Area, revealed that the erosion which caused the collapse of the one story building at Eziabor Village Oko has given terrible marks on the ground, which he said, is a dangerous indication that more buildings in the village will collapse if urgent measures are not taken.

 

Also speaking, the Vice president of Oko Peoples Union, Chief Sunday Nwafor called for urgent engineering work at the site to save the people from constant nightmare.

 

Some residents of the area including Chief Remigius Okeke, Lady Christiana Obi as well as numerous wailing indigenes of the village, explained that they have continued to lose both human and valuable property to erosion in the area and appealed to relevant authorities and concerned citizens for help.
