Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University has held her Maiden Climate Action Summit in pursuit of promoting green economy and advancing the cause of livable and prosperous Anambra State as envisioned by Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

 

The summit held at the ETF auditorium of the university, featured keynote speeches, panel discussion, launching of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University five-Year Climate Action Strategic Plan, Investiture of Climate Action Ambassadors, Students Environment Police among others.

The theme is ,”Tremendous Strategy for a Sustainable Future.”

 

Governor Chukwuma Soludo represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Ernest Ezeajughi said Anambra State Environmental Protection and Administrative law 2024, captures a whole lot of what the State is doing about climate change.

 

While mentioning various projects his government has carried out in education, human capital development, road construction, electricity, Governor Soludo extended his invitation to the public for tomorrows launch of green seedlings distribution aimed at making green and clean Anambra State a reality.

The Convener and Acting Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Kate Omenugha appreciated all their partners for keeping alive their goal for a better tomorrow, a liveable and prosperous Anambra State which needs team work.

 

She explained that the reason for the summit is to rub minds on what and how they can do things differently saying that it is possible for them to change their psychic and begin to think globally saying that the world cannot wait for them to catch up but they need to run fast to catch up with the world.

While revealing that the university will plant one million trees in five years, Professor Omenugha maintained that they have put together a five year road map for Tree Planting and Climate Action.

 

The Keynote Speaker and Director-General Nigeria Conservation Foundation, Dr Joseph Onoja in his paper presentation titled, “Role of Trees in Sustainable Nigeria’s Growth”, said biodiversity is vital for the Nigeria’s ecological balance, economic development and cultural heritage.

 

The Commissioner for Environment, Engineer Felix Odimegwu disclosed that the state government identifies with Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University very intentional in the green initiative by providing a green cover and making it sustainable with planting of one million trees every year.

Professor Charles Anosike, Director-General, Nigeria Meteorological Agency, represented by Dr. Gloria Onyegbule, pointed out the mandate, vision and mission of the agency noting that they provide weather services to Nigeria and her neighbouring countries and emphasized that what Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University is doing with the Climate Action Summit is like preparing the university community for the future.

 

During the panel discussion, the discussants called for the people to change their attitude towards the environment stressing the importance of planting trees to mitigate environmental degradation.

 

The Chairman, Planning Committee of the Summit, Professor Kingsley Nwozor in his remarks said what they are doing is to ignite the engine so that the train will go in full speed saying that Professor Omenugha saw a problem, the devastating effects of climate change in the university environment and insisted that they must solve it and take back the ecosystem hence the reason for the summit and appreciated their partners for their unwavering support.
