Media Practitioners have been challenged to be more knowledgeable and versatile in all aspects more importantly, in digital communication and technology.

This formed the crux of the matter at the Maiden National Summit on Child Rights held at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka.

The summit which was themed” The role of the Nigeria Media in bridging the urban-rural divide for children in the digital age’ was organized by the institution in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF.


The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Professor Carol Umeobi in her opening speech said today’s global concern on child rights sprouted from the aversion of vulnerabilities to which children were exposed in Europe during the Second World War which includes abduction, recruitment into the arm forces, rape and sexual attack on schools and other sundry hostile actions.

Speaking on the theme, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Paul University, Awka, Professor Chinyere Okunna who is the paper presenter, said journalists should be more knowledgeable about internet service so as to convince people on the advantages of digital communication
Contributing, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Anambra Broadcasting Service ABS, Mr. Christopher Molokwu represented by an ABS On Air Personality, Miss Sandra Akpa, noted the important of access to digital communication to children saying that it behooves the parents to monitor them.


On his part, the State Chairman, Nigerian Union of Journalist, Dr Emeka Odogwu and one of the participants and the former Director News and Current Affairs department, ABS, Mr. Gab Okpalaeze, disclosed that the essence of the training was to equip the journalist on the right reportage about issues concerning the children in the digital era and their rights as well as access to information in the society.
