Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo says the Anambra state Assembly new law on local government autonomy is designed to give life to the Supreme Court judgement.

Governor Soludo stated this during a statewide broadcast held at the Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia.

While reiterating that the law remains valid, Governor Soludo described himself as a federalist and insisted that to give effect to the autonomy, a structured collaboration among the tiers of government is imperative.

The Governor added that in the federal system, no tier of government can function without collaboration, given its constitutional functions, adding that the law is consistent with the constitution and will lead to increased transparency and accountability.

The Governor added that the constitution puts the provision of basic education, primary healthcare, among other roles under the local government and emphasized that absolute autonomy will mean a recipe for humongous chaos as without such collaboration, many local governments will end up in huge financial mess.

The Governor was accompanied by the Speaker, Anambra State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze, the state Head of Service, Barrister Theodora Igwegbe, House of Assembly members, Mayors of the twenty-one local government areas of the state as well as the Labour Union leaders in the state.
