The Anambra State government has been praised for its implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, describing it as a model.
The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in the Country, Mr. Edward Kallon, made the commendation while speaking to newsmen shortly after the opening ceremony of the 2017 annual retreat of the United Nations Country Team, holding in Awka.Â
The theme for the three day retreat is “Operationalizing the Humanitarian-Development Nexus: A new way of working in enhancing UN coherence to support Nigeria’s development”, and it is expected to harmonize all UN activities and secure a clear vision and division of labour for the upcoming Development Assistant Framework.Â
Mr. Kallon who is also the UNDP representative in the country, noted that the State government is a champion in meeting its precautionary agreement, stating that this was the reason behind the choice of the state to host this year’s annual retreat.
While providing more insights into the reason for the retreat, the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, country Representative, Mr. Mohamed Fall, noted that the leadership of the United Nations is seeking easier ways to domesticate its programmes to be people centered and to entrench stronger strategies to strengthen governance systems in the country.
In a goodwill message, the Corps Marshall Federal Road Safety Commission, Mr. Boboye Oyeyemi represented by the Deputy Corp Marshall O-I Ewhrudjakpor, commended the UN in its work in the country and stated that the FRSC is adopting best international practices in its governance structures and road safety operations. Â
The United Nations Country Team retreat attracted all stakeholders in the Delivery-as-One programme, which is channeled at providing a structured conduit in fulfilling UN objectives in the country.Â
