Judiciary staff have been accused of incessant extortion and acts capable of ridiculing efforts in attaining judicial excellence in Anambra State.

In his address during special court session to mark 2024/2025 legal year at the Judiciary Headquarters in Awka, the Chairman, Committee of Chairmen of eight Branches of Nigerian Bar Association Anambra chapter, Mr Afam Obi, alleged that some of the judiciary staff act as demigods in their lines of duty.

Lending his voice, an Awka-based legal practitioner, Mr Ejiofo Umegbogu, also alleged that court registrars frustrate quick dispensation of justice by delaying in typing and processing court rulings, while court bailiffs demand huge sums of money to serve court processes, which ordinarily should be their duties.

While the Chairman of Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, Anambra State chapter, Mr. Henry Ezeoke, declined comment over the allegations, the state Chief Judge, Justice Onochie Anyachebelu, who expressed worry over the allegations, said necessary actions will be taken against erring judiciary staff upon receipt of formal complaints.
