A one-day town hall meeting on promotion and protection of human rights organized by the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, in collaboration with United Nations Development Program has ended with a call on Ndi Anambra to report to the commission whenever their rights are infringed upon.

In his opening remark at the meeting in Awka tagged “Tripartite partnership, TPP, to support National Human Rights Institutions”, which was attended by community and religious leaders, women groups, youth associations, among others, the Special Adviser on Human Rights, NHRC, Abuja, Dr. Hillary Ogbonna, described the Commission as the police station of human rights violation.

Contributing, the Senior Legal Officer, NHRC Abuja, Miss Chioma Okoli, further explained that the commission advises government on human rights-related matters, proposes legislative and policy reforms, and engages in activities to prevent human rights abuses, as well as promote awareness and respect for human rights.

Anambra State Coordinator of the Commission, Barrister Obinna Maduforo, listed resistance by communities, disinterest on the side of victims due to threat to their lives or monetary compensation as major challenges militating against the achievement of their mandate.
