A forty-four-year-old South Carolina man, Marion Bowman Junior, who was sentenced to death in 2002 for the murder of a school friend and twenty-one-year-old Kandee Martin, is scheduled to be put to death by lethal injection today, the first execution in the United States this year.

Martin was shot to death and her body placed in the trunk of her car, which was set on fire, but Bowman, who was twenty-year-old at the time, has acknowledged that he sold drugs to Martin but denied any involvement in her murder.
