The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, says it has not been officially notified of the vacancy in Anambra South Senatorial Seat.

The Chairman of INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu who disclosed this during his first consultative meeting in 2025 with the media in Abuja, said even though they are aware of the demise of the member representing Anambra South in the Senate, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, the seat has not been officially declared vacant by the Senate.

He, however, disclosed that the commission is ready and willing to conduct a bye election in 30 days from the declaration of vacancy that if the vacancy is also declared on the Onitsha North I Constituency, both elections can run on the same day.

The INEC boss also implored the media to be more intentional about their coverage of party primaries so as to nip in the bud, issues of delegates buying which oftentimes run to the tunes of thousands of dollars.

Earlier, the National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Alhasan Yahaya represented by the National Secretary, Achike Chude, pledged unalloyed support of the union so INEC can succeed in its mandates.
