Founded in 2007 in Santa Cruz, California, the International Beer Day is observed every first Friday in August.
Since inception, International Beer Day has grown from a small localized event in the western United States into a worldwide celebration spanning two hundred and seven cities, eighty countries and six continents.
Correspondent Chibuzor Obidike sampled people’s opinion on the significance of the celebration and reports that the celebration affords beer lovers all over the country the opportunity to raise and toast to brewers and bartenders and as well rejoice in the greatness of beer.
Speaking on the significance of the day, a resident of Umuawulu community, Mr. Chika Orji and a broadcaster Mr. Roy Ekwunife described beer as a stimulator which plays a significant role both in the traditional institution and the society in general as it brings together people of like minds who discuss salient issues while enjoying their beer.
They advised the citizens to be mindful of their limit in order not to bring their integrity to ridicule.
While admonishing parents against giving little children beer, a Civil Servant Mr. Shedrack and a University Don from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Mr. Tony Okoye, acknowledged that the celebration is apt as it gives friends and relations a taste of enjoyment during discussions, adding that beer also facilitate unity in all parts of the world.
The two respondents called on government at all levels to enact laws that will guide public bars and restaurants in ensuring that the approved age of drinking which is eighteen is upheld at all cost.
Participants in this year’s celebration are encouraged to give one another the gift of beer by buying each other drinks, and to express gratitude to brewers, bartenders, and other beer technicians.
