Governor Willie Obiano has inaugurated the newly remodeled DMGS Roundabout. This is keeping with his administration’s resolve to improve the aesthetics of Onitsha Metropolis and environs.


The Governor also switched on streetlights installed by his administration along the Old Market Road by Ajasa street, Onitsha.
The project which was designed and executed by the Commissioner for Environment, Mr Mike Okonkwo, also include the recovery of a burnt filling station site located near the Roundabout where trees will be planted.


It was observed that the Roundabout has been beautified with five gigantic elephant tusk-like sculpture works and a statue of a former President who hails from Onitsha, Late Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, erected with colourful lights adorning the whole area, making it a delight to behold both in the day and at night.
Governor Obiano was accompanied to the function by his wife, Chief Mrs Ebelechukwu, former Governor of the Central Bank, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, top Government functionaries among others.
Inaugurating the project, Governor Obiano said his administration is committed to transforming the aesthetics of Onitsha. He said the ancient city of Onitsha with its very rich cultural heritage, deserves monuments that will showcase the beauty of the town, adding that the idea behind the project is to celebrate Onitsha, the legendary of Zik and the Unity of the Igbo nation.
On the significance of the five elephant tusk-like sculpture works joined with an “Aka”, Governor Obiano said they represent the five states of the South East, explaining that although they are of unequal shapes and sizes, their strength lies on their unity.
The Governor also proceeded to switch on the streetlights along Old Market Road by Ajasa Street, where he was greeted by a tumultuous applause by the inhabitants whose area has been illuminated by the lights.
Addressing the people, Governor Obiano said the operation light up Anambra is going on and will extend to all nooks and crannies of the State.
He urged residents of the area to endeavor to protect the facilities, and shun indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainages and street trading, assuring that his administration is committed to making their environment more habitable.
After the switching on of the lights, Governor Obiano proceeded to inspect the whole length where it covered.
