World Teachers’ Day also known as International Teachers Day established in 1994 and it commemorates the signing of the 1966 UNESCO and International Labour Organization – ILO’s recommendation concerning the status of teachers.
World Teachers Day was initiated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization UNESCO, not only to show appreciation to teachers all over the World but also to be used as a day to assess and help teachers improve as well as look at the unique issues that directly affect them.
On this day, various events are held all over the world including celebrations to honour specific contributions teachers have made in the society.
Speaking on the significant of the day, the Acting Director, Anambra State Library Service, Dr Nkechi Udeze, said teachers should be celebrated by everyone as they play pivotal role in nurturing and moulding individuals and the society at large.
Dr Udeze expressed satisfaction that the State Government is giving teachers necessary empowerment and motivation to increase productivity and urged them to always walk tall because of their unique position in the society.
Also speaking, the state chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers ,Comrade Ifeanyi Ofodile, commended the friendly disposition of the state government to the welfare of teachers and assured that they would continue live up to expectation.
Comrade Ofodile said the World Teachers Day will be celebrated with many activities lined up by teachers and used the opportunity to thank Governor Willie Obiano for promoting over four hundred teachers in the state to Grade level sixteen while appealing to him to employ more teachers in the state work force to replace the retired ones.
Also speaking , Comrade Livinus Eta Omini, said teachers should be celebrated because of the role they play in individual and national development noting that the working condition of teachers determine the learning condition of a child and called for regular capacity building programmes for teachers.
In their separate reactions a former Chairman of Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, ASUBEB, Sir Vincent Otikpa and a School Principal, Dr Uche Anaekeokwu, advised teachers to remain dedicated to duty and shun acts capable of dragging the image of the profession to the mud .
A teacher, Mrs. Agatha Obikwere, said teachers in the state have every reason to celebrate as Governor Obiano has continued to give them a sense of belonging.
The theme for 2018 World Teachers Day is, “the Right to Education means the Right to Qualified Teachers.”
