The media have been advised not to serve as megaphones for hate speeches as peace is a strong condition for development.

A guest speaker, Professor Muyiwa Popoola, gave the advice during the sixth Triennial Delegates conference of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, in Abeokuta, Ogun state.

Speaking on the theme “ Media, Hate Speeches and 2019 General Elections in Nigeria, A Democratic Participant or Democratic Press”,
Professor Popoola, described a democratic Media system as one that sacrifices Journalists on the altar of false hood while a Democratized Participant Media is one that is unprofessional and which has lost its essence to the political system.

He said the primary objective of media ownership is profitability noting that the media in Nigeria essentially take the coloration of their owners.

While saying that truth is independent of the media, the University Don, regretted what he called the crisis of truth in the country and called for enabling laws to ensure the media behave responsibility.
