The Federal Road Safety Corps has been urged to establish eye clinics in all its unit commands.
Speaking when a delegation of the state chapter of the Nigerian Optometric Association visited the state sector command of the FRSC in Awka, the Chairman Dr Chigozie Umeh said this would serve to identify
drivers with defective vision Paul Ezeoke reports that Dr Umeh explained that the optometric clinic domiciled in FRSC Units would also ensure proper and reliable screening during recruitment exercise and expand the scope of employment for optometrists.
He noted that this would translate to accessible eye care services thereby fulfilling the universal eye health.
Dr Umeh also called for regular eye health talk in all the Units command across the state to instill eye Health consciousness to help prevent avoidable blindness.
Another member of the delegation, Dr Ifeanyi Obi said adopting preventive eye care measure would help to reduce burden of blindness.
In his remarks another optometrist, Dr Chris Ezelum called for withdraw of driving licenses of drivers with sight challenges.
Responding, the state sector commander of FRSC, Mr. Sunday Ajayi said good vision enhances safety on highways and restated the commitment of the Corps in sustaining partnership with the Association, noting that their collaboration in motor park programmes is yielding the desiredgoals towards eradicating people driving without good vision.
Mr. Ajayi stressed the need for mass awareness campaign to re-orient people on the danger of driving with defective right.
He also cautioned against other distraction while driving, including using phones or playing DVD .
