Red Cross Distributes Relief Materials To Persons Affected By Flood In Anambra Worth Over N500M

The Nigerian Red Cross Society, in collaboration with the international committee of Red Cross in response to the state government Clarion call have distributed relief materials worth over five hundred million naira to the one hundred and sixty one holding centers across the state.
The distribution exercise was held within the various flood affected communities .

Presenting the items, while flagging off the exercise for the people of Anambra West Council Area at Bishop Crowder Holding Center Onitsha, the State Vice chairman, Nigerian Red Cross, Prof. Peter katchy , said the distribution of the relief materials, supported by the European Union, was to cushion the effect of the flood disaster as well as well as alleviate the plight of the vulnerable.
He observed that Red Cross Society , as a humanitarian organisation will continue to assist in tackling and responding to emergencies in the state.
Prof. Katchy disclosed that more than four hundred and fifty beneficiaries from each of the affected areas have benefitted from the gesture , noting that similar exercises was held at St. James Iyiowa Odekpe Ogbaru council , as well as Anambra East and West.
On his part , the state secretary of the Organization, Engineer Kingsley Okoye while itemizing the relief materials to include sachets of aqua tablets, bags of food of different types , Cereals, beddings, wrapper, vegetable oil, salt, buckets amongst others , said the criteria for distribution of the materials include childhood family, female headed families, vulnerable mothers, chronic disease and disability , as well as lactating and pregnant mothers , chronic disease and disability .
He said plans are underway to ascertain the extent of damage , pending their rehabilitation, pointing out that , out of over 9,000 (nine thousand) families affected were affected by the disaster, the organization is selecting the 1,000 more devastated families.
Engineer Okoye advised them to judiciously utilize the items.
In their separate speeches, a pregnant woman , Mrs. Blessing Ojadi and Mr. Christopher Nwayibe, who disclosed that they lost all their property to the flood disaster , appreciated the organization for their commitment in alleviating their plight.
