Governor Willie Obiano has called on the World Bank to increase its interventions on various erosion sites across the State.

He made the call when he visited the ongoing Nnewichi Erosion site in Nnewi North Local government area which is about three point eight kilometer stretch and fifty-four meters deep before the intervention.

According to the Governor, the World Bank is intervening on fourteen erosion sites, out of the nine hundred and seventy-two active erosion sites in the State.

While stressing that the State government has been consistent in paying its counterpart fund, Governor Obiano called on members of the benefiting Community to accord the Contractor handling the project all necessary support.

The Commissioner for Environment, Mr Mike Okonkwo and the Project Co-ordinator of Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management, Mr Michael Ivenso stressed that the State government has taken all necessary measures to ensure strict adherence to standards.

Speaking on behalf of the Contractor handling the project, Mr Tang Pengwel, while appreciating the State government for its support, assured that the project will be delivered in 2019.

Meanwhile, the Contractor handling the erosion project at the road linking Federal High Court and Ekwueme Square in Awka has assured of completing the project before next year’s rainy season.

He gave the assurance when Governor Willie Obiano visited the Site. The Project is a joint intervention between the State government and the World Bank.

Governor Obiano who explained that the project is a major intervention, which has saved property in the area from being submerged, noted that proper drainage and access road will be constructed at the site in line with his promise.

The Commissioner for Environment, Mr Mike Okonkwo maintained that erosion is a major problem facing the State, pointing out that the State government has attracted over one billion naira intervention fund, having being consistent in paying its counterpart fund.

The Project Coordinator of the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management in the State, Mr Michael Ivenso explained that water from the Town empties into the erosion site, assuring that they will try to create a different water channel in the area.

Speaking on behalf of the Contracting firm handling the project, Mr Wouwsef Yusuf assured of its timely completion.
Governor Obiano was received by the staff of the Federal High Court, Awka on arrival who expressed optimism that the project will be completed on scheduled.
