Ndigbo have been been urged to preserve and promote their language and cultural heritage for them not go into extinction.

The Chairman, Post Primary School Service Commission, PPSSC, Lady Joy Ulasi made the call during the end of the year party and Christmas carol of ”Otu Suwakwa Igbo” held at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church Cathedral Awka.

Speaking on the importance of language to human lives, Lady Joy described language as most symbolic identity of any people, tribe or race and as such must be cherished, promoted, maintained and sustained, encouraging parents of Igbo extraction to always speak Igbo language to their children.

The National President, Anambra State Association of Town Unions, ASATU, Chief Alex Onukwue represented by President General of Nawfia Town Union, Mr. Nnonyelu Okoye, lauded Governor Obiano for his tireless efforts in promoting Igbo language and culture, calling all and sundry to key in, to achieve the desired goal.

The State President of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene represented by Former President General ASATU, Dr Ben Ezeagbogu charged Ndigbo to embrace their culture which he said is going into extinction due to the attitude of parents towards Igbo language and thanked Otu Suwakwa Igbo for introducing such initiative as a way to promote the language.

The traditional ruler of Abagana in Njikoka Council Area, Igwe Mbamalu Okeke reiterated that Igbo language is the identity of Ndigbo noting that it should be respected and preserved.

The Founder of Otu Suwakwa Igbo, Professor Pita Ejifor explained that the initiative was introduced in February 14th 2016, with the aim of restoring the Igbo language and cultural identity and stressed that many books have been written in Igbo language to back up the vision.

Professor Ejifor called on Ndigbo at home and in the diaspora to promote Igbo culture and take pride in speaking Igbo language.

Earlier in a sermon, Pastor Patrick Orogbu, advised the participants to carry the message of Suwakwa Igbo to their various families and communities.

The event was attended by University Librarian, Professor Obiora Nwosu, Member Otu Suwakwa Igbo, Chief Sunday Ezeaka among others who urged Ndigbo to go back to their culture and uphold it as their forefathers did during their time.
