Total Adherence to and Compliance to Nigeria’s New Building code has been identified as the Best Approach to Curtailing Menace of Building Collapse in the country.
This was stressed during a one day town hall meeting tagged “Colloquium on Building Collapse” held in Awka.
The rising incidence of building collapse in the society has become a source of concern for both Government and stakeholders in Nigeria with emphasis on the harm caused by its re-occurrence ranging from loss of lives to properties as well as it’s adverse effects on the economy and development, thus the need for measures to avert and curtail further building collapse in future.
The Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Mr Emeka Ezenwanne, represented by the Director Operations and Service Ministry of Housing, Mr Edison Obianyor pointed out the need for
stakeholders in building industry to embrace their responsibility, adding that government through relevant agencies will do it’s best to ensure safety of Ndi Anambra through fight against building collapse.
Earlier while presenting their addresses, the initiator of the program, Mr Simeon Okafor, who is also the Special Assistant to the Governor on Housing and the chairman on the occasion, Sir Tony Akpulu who decried the effect of Building Collapse, pointed out that the purpose of the event was to discuss and come up with a reliable and immediate solution to reduce the incidence to the barest minimum.
They however expressed optimism that the outcome of the meeting will impact positively on the current fight against building collapse as a Communique will be raised to proffer solution to the problem.
On their part, the General Manager Anambra State Physical Planning Board, Mr Victor Okpoko, the President National Association of Building students, Comrade Onyeka Onwupeluonye while appreciating the organizers of the program, urged stakeholders in the building industry to make integrity their watch word calling on governments at all levels to establish agencies to help monitor the activities of builders.
Others who spoke at the event include the Director of Works, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Reverend Cannon John Anyachibolu, Mr Ifeanyi Ofili of the Nigeria Society of Engineers, Professor Henry Aginanu of the Nigeria Society of Structural Engineers among others.
