Religious leaders have been called upon to entrench peace, unity and harmony in order to save the country from religious intolerance and fanaticism.

The Presiding Bishop, National Holy Ghost Church of Christ Nnewi Province, Bishop Ozioma Ozoemena made the call when he featured in an ABS programme, “In-depth” in Awka.

Bishop Ozoemena described religious intolerance or fanaticism as the inability of an adherent of a particular region to acknowledge, accommodate and accept the right of others to live by another Faith different from theirs.

He noted that the 1999 constitution made it clear that every individual is entitled to freedom of thought, conscience and religion, including freedom to change his religion or belief adding that if
truly Nigeria is a secular state and practice the constitution, no one should be victimized for his belief.

The Prelate who stressed that religious intolerance has caused great harm to the country’s development called on political and religious leaders to fight against the militating factor.

On his part, the General Overseer, Mount Horeb Miracle Assembly, Nnewi, Apostle Godspower Ebowusi, said the high rate of killings due to religious intolerance in many parts of the country is worrisome, urging government to fight against it.

Apostle Ebowusi, further said that the religious fanaticism has brought some obnoxious acts in the society including stealing, kidnap and murder among others.
