The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, says it is committed to conducting free, fair and credible elections in the country.
The Chairman of the Commission, Professor Mamoodu Yakubu gave the assurance at the International Conference Centre Abuja, while briefing stakeholders, local and international observers on the reasons for the Independent National Electoral Commission to reschedule the
Presidential and National Assembly elections to twenty-third of this month and that of Governorship, State Houses of Assembly and Federal Capital Territory Abuja Area Council elections to March ninth 2019.
According to Professor Yakubu, though INEC was fully prepared for the election but due to some litigations concerning nomination of candidates by various political parties and the inferno that gutted some of its offices in Abia, Plateau and Anambra States, which caused a big challenge to the conduct of the election, INEC has no option than to postpone the election by one week to enable it give the country a credible election.
Professor Yakubu, maintained that the postponement of yesterday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections, has nothing to do with security or political influence and expressed appreciation to Nigerians for their understanding.
He disclosed that about four hundred and twenty-one point seven million ballot papers have been printed by INEC for the 2019 general elections.
According to the INEC Chairman, deployment of smart card readers for this Saturday’s rescheduled Presidential and National Assembly elections will take place between Wednesday twentieth and Thursday Twenty-first, while training of personnel for the election is Thursday
twenty-first while deployment of personnel is twenty second-February.
He said that the commission considered a lot of things before arriving at the rescheduled dates for the elections.
