The Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Public Procurement has charged local government authorities to follow procurement law in the award and execution of projects to encourage transparency.
The committee made the assertion when they embarked on oversight visit to Aguata Local Government Area as part of their constitutional responsibilities.
Speaking during the exercise, the Chairman of the Committee, Chief Romanus Obi, explained that the essence of their visit to the local government council was to ascertain whether the local government authority followed procurement law in the execution of their capital projects for the year 2018.
The Committee, however, mandated them to submit all the necessary documents that will enable them to scrutinize the projects they executed during the year under review.
In his speech, the Head of Administration, Aguata Local Area, Mr. Jaja Nwankwo, commended the committee for living up to their constitutional responsibilities, assuring that they would submit the
documents requested from them by the committee in two weeks time.
The committee also visited Orumba South Local Government Area where it mandated the local Government Council to always put their records straight to encourage accountability.
Responding, the Chairman of the Committee, Chief Raymond Onyegu, promised to address all the pitfalls identified by the committee in the course of their oversight visit to the local government.
The committee also extended their oversight responsibility to Orumba North Local Government Council.
