World Meteorological Day is celebrated every year on Twenty three March to commemorate the entry into force the convention that created the World Meteorological Organization in 1950 by the United Nations.

The day also highlights the contributions of National Meteorological and Hydrological services to safety and well being of the society which often features conferences, symposia and exhibitions for meteorological professionals, community leaders and the public aimed at attracting media attention to raise Meteorology’s profile.

Theme for this year’s celebration is “the sun, the earth and the weather”.

Speaking on the importance of the day, the Anambra state Commissioner for Works, Engineer Marcel Ifejiofor, said that the role of the Meteorologist is essential to day to day human activities.

Commissioner Ifejiofor noted that they cannot do without Meteorology in trying to know the state of the weather to enable them plan on the nature of projects to embark on and called for greater awareness on the activities of meteorologists.

For the Head of Department of Geography and Meteorology Faculty of Environmental Sciences, UNIZIK Awka, Dr Emma Ezenwaji, said Meteorologists are important for effective services in aviation, agriculture, transport and road construction , among others and regretted that many people do not know about their services and advocated expanding their services to both state, local government and villages.

His counterpart in the Department of Forestry and Wild Life Management, Faculty of Agriculture, Dr Caleb Ike-, said it is a principal factor that can determine increase or decrease in agricultural productivity.

A geographer, Chief Donatus Nwosu said it is a part of geography that determines weather and called for more enrollments into the course.
