The King of Thailand, King Maha Vajiralongkorn has married the deputy head of his personal security detail, and gave her the title of queen.

The deputy head of his personal security detail, Queen Suthida Tidjai, was made a general in 2016.

Queen Suthida is King Vajiralongkorn’s long-term partner and has been seen with him in public for many years, though their relationship had never before been officially acknowledged.

In 2014 Vajiralongkorn appointed Queen Suthida, a former flight attendant for Thai Airways, as the deputy commander of his bodyguard unit and made her a full general in the army in December 2016.

The surprise announcement about his long-time consort came before his elaborate coronation ceremonies begin on Saturday.

King Vajiralongkorn, sixty-six, who became the constitutional monarch after the death of his much-loved father in 2016, has been married and divorced three times before and has seven children.

The king was seen pouring sacred water on the head of Queen Suthida after which they signed a marriage registry.
