All Hallows Seminary Onitsha and Hand Maid Infant Jesus Primary School Awka, have emerged winners of the 2019 Governor’s School Debate in both Primary and Secondary School categories.
The event which took place at the Professor Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre Awka, attracted Teachers and students of both public and private schools across the state
The schools emerged winners after defeating their opponents from one thousand four hundred and eight schools that took part in the competition which started from the local government to zonal level before the grand finale.
The secondary schools brain stormed on the topic, “Dictators should be Granted Amnesty for a return of Leaving Power,” while primary schools battled on, “A State of emergency is Needed More in Education than in Road Project.”
Speaking at the event, Governor Willie Obiano represented by his Principal Secretary, Sir Willie Nwokoye while expressing satisfaction with the commitment of the teachers in handling their responsibilities, said his government will continue to initiate more programmes and policies that will make the Education Sector great.
The Governor advised students that lost in the competition not to be discouraged but to learn from their counterparts and prepare them selves for greater tasks ahead.
In a remark, the Coordinator of President’s School Debate of Nigeria, Chief Jali Olituh lauded Governor Obiano on his investment in the Education Sector calling for its sustenance.
In a speech, the Commissioner for Basic Education, Professor Kate Omenugha pointed out that the competition is in line with the commitment of the present administration to ensuring that the learning needs of all are met through equitable distribution of resources.
On her part, the State Debate Coordinator, Mrs Amaka Anaekwe while expressing happiness on the success of this year’s edition, expressed the hope that the state will record more successes through the debate club.
In an interview the Rector of All Hallows Seminary Onitsha winners of the Secondary School category, Reverend Father Charles Onwughalu, said they were able to win because of the students commitment and hard work.
