Anambra State Government says it has concluded plans to upgrade the State Library to international standard to encourage reading culture among students.
Governor Willie Obiano disclosed this during this year’s Readership Promotion Campaign of the National Library of Nigeria, at the Professor Kenneth Dike Central e-Library in Awka.
The Governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr C Don Adinuba, emphasized the importance of reading among Nigerians.
In a welcome address, the Acting Director, Anambra State Library Services, Miss Nkechi Udeze who stressed the importance of reading commended the efforts of the Obiano administration in making library essential part of its development agenda.
The Chairman National Library of Nigeria, Professor Lenrie Aina represented by Mrs Chinyere Onuoha said that the objective of the campaign was to encourage reading among Nigerians while the Acting Head of National Library Enugu, Mrs Rachael Neboh, described reading as lifelong business.
The Chief Librarian Federal College of Education, Technical, Umunze, Dr Adolphus Ugwuanyi said: reading makes a man and broadens one’s horizon.
The theme of the event is “Reviving Moribund Culture of Reading in Nigeria for Sustainable National Development”.
It featured spelling and reading competitions from different schools.
