Anambra State Government has arrested one Mr. Ogochukwu Udefi for alleged illegal tax and levy collection from shuttle drivers at Abagana, Njikoka Council Area.
The alleged illegal tax collector was picked up at his operating area along Oye Agu Abagana axis, by the taskforce Unit of the Anambra State Ministry of Trade and Commerce, Market and Wealth Creation.
Items recovered from the thirty-four-year-old suspect who hails from Awgu, Enugu State, included cash of eleven-thousand-five-hundred and twenty naira, and all kinds of unsold motor tickets.
Speaking to the ABS after parading the suspect at the Jerome Udoji Secretariat Awka, the Commissioner for Trade, Commerce, Market and Wealth Creation, Doctor Christian Mmadubuko condemned the actions of illegal tax operators in Anambra State, who, despite the warnings from
the Government, continued with their notorious activities, and said that the present administration, through the Ministry will continue to arrest and prosecute those found in such illegal business.
The Commander of the Taskforce on illegal tolls in Anambra State, Mr. Nathan Obikwelu warned those who flout the ban by Anambra State Government on temporary cancellation of collection of fees, levies and tolls in the state to desist as his team will not relent in using the appropriate channels to get rid of their illicit activities in Anambra State.
He charged drivers, traders and market leaders to be law abiding and to contact the taskforce using the number 08037835358, and report any illegal toll collector in both markets and streets of Anambra State.
The suspect, Mr. Udefi confessed to the crime, but pleaded for forgiveness as he promised never to indulge in such act if released.
