Street traders along Uwakwe Ukaegbu Building Materials International Market, Umuokpu, off Onitsha -Enugu Expressway Awka, have been advised to evacuate their goods and services from the road or risk confiscation.

The Transition Committee chairman, Awka South Local Government Area Mr. Leo Nwuba gave the advice when he paid a sensitization visit to the market to intimate them on the dangers of trading on the road.

According to Mr. Nwuba, the visit was imperative because of the pace of construction work on the road which when completed will witness heavy vehicular movement, thus the need to relocate the traders and ensure that no life will be lost.

He charged them to evacuate their goods within one week, stating that efforts are geared towards reducing casualties on the road.

The Awka South Boss unveiled that the Council had since last year, issued an evacuation notice to the traders while warning that anyone who fails to adhere strictly to the directive will have his or her goods and services impounded and stressed that the Council is committed to ensuring that all markets under its watch meet up with international standard.

He however, frowned at traders who build un-authorized structures at the car parks and inside the markets thereby encroaching on the parking spaces provided for vehicles, which he pointed out promotes the aesthetics of the market.

On his part, the President General of the market, Chief Chukwudi Nwankwo assured that the market association will group the traders into sections according to their products and services adding that the directive is for the welfare of Ndi Anambra as the state government values all lives in the state.
