The state government says it will partner relevant stakeholders in the water sector to leverage on the numerous achievements of the UNICEF in collaboration with the EU under the Water and Sanitation Hygiene, WASH, program which is already at the final phase in the state.

The state Deputy Governor, Dr. Nkem Okeke stated this when a delegation from the Sector Wide Approach for WASH visited him in his office at the Government House Awka, to intimate him on the round off stage of the WASH intervention program of the UNICEF and EU in the state.

SWAP team comprises representatives from UNICEF, EU and the states Ministry of Utilities.

Deputy Governor Okeke while commending the UNICEF and EU for helping the state in tackling some of its challenges especially in water related issues in some of the communities, especially the hinterlands, through the water reform programs, assured that the Obiano government will do the needful to ensure that the successes recorded by the group in the state within the years of the interventions are maintained for the good of the citizenry.

He appealed to UNICEF and EU to device more means of helping the state as the WASH program ends, assuring that the Anambra state government is ever ready to accord them all necessary support.

Speaking earlier, the Leader of the team, Mr Ibrahim Conteh who is the UNICEF Chief Field Officer, Enugu, recommended that Anambra state government partners private sectors in water sector for more effective functioning of the sector, and promised that UNICEF will continue to assist the state, as it remains one of its favourites in the federation based on the cooperation of the present government with them.

Emphasizing on the importance of hygienic water to human life and other activities, the UNICEF National Consultant, Mr. Roy Ndomaegba who described the state as very dynamic, harped on the need for human capacity building to consolidate the state government’s efforts in the water and agricultural sectors, and maintain the state’s status as one of the exporters of agro produce in the country.

In an overview on the achievements of the group in the state through the scheme, the Program Manager Real Water Supply and Hygiene, Ministry of Public Utilities, Mr Victor Ezekwo, called for activation of the MOU the state government signed a time ago with a South African firm on the Greater Onitsha water scheme, for hygienic and effective water supply in Onitsha.
