Anambra Govt Restates Resolve To Actualize Drug Free Society, Asks Schools To Establish Drug Free Clubs

Anambra State Government has restated it’s commitment to ensuring that the state becomes a drug abuse free society. 
Governor Willie Obiano stated this at the Professor Dora Akunyili Women Development Center in Awka during a sensitization workshop organized by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency to commemorate the International Day against Drug abuse and Illicit Trafficking. 

Our correspondent reports that  Governor Obiano who spoke through the Executive Secretary, Anambra State Health Insurance Scheme, Dr Simeon Onyemaechi said that his administration will continue to provide the necessary support to ensure the intake of illicit drugs is reduced drastically, calling on relevant stakeholders, especially the security agencies to lead the way through practicing what they preach. 

The Governor urged secondary schools across the state to establish a drug free club stressing that such will go a long way in curbing the menace and assured of establishment of a standard drug rehabilitation center for victims of drug abuse.  

Earlier in his address, the state Commander, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Mr. Sule Momodu while highlighting the dangers of drug use and illegal trade, noted that the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is an opportunity to  express  the Agency’s determination to strengthen cooperation to achieve the goal of a society free of drug abuse.
He further commended the state government for its commitment in building a better and brighter future for Ndi Anambra and for providing the agency with a level playing ground to operate. 

Reacting, Anambra state Commissioner of Police CP Mustapha Dandaura, represented by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Yemi Ajayi, noted that effective responses to the world drug problem required the combined efforts of relevant institutions in other to provide integrated solutions, in line with the International Drug Control Conventions, human rights obligations and the Sustainable Development Goals. 
Some students who participated in the program including Precious Anyikamba and Ann Okoye commended the initiative assured of taking the message to their mates in their various communities. 
This year’s International Day against Drug abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking which has its theme as “Health for Justice, Justice for Health” highlights that justice and health are two sides of the same coin when it comes to addressing drug problems.
