The Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe, named after a notable
first Republic Nigerian parliamentarian; the late Right Honourable
Doctor Abyssinia Akweke Nwafor- Orizu, has grown as one of the
historical reminders of the huge breakthroughs of Doctor Orizu both in
politics and education.
Prince Akweke Nwafor Orizu was Nigeria’s Senate President in the first
Republic and the First Acting President of Nigeria, from October,
nineteen sixty five till the first military coup of January fifteen,
nineteen sixty- six.
No wonder why Prince Nnamsom Nwafor-Orizu; a descendant of the
erstwhile Lawmaker, paid a familiarization visit to the College of
Education, Nsugbe to identify with the legacies of his father.
The visit by Prince Orizu to the institution named after his father
was also to interact with the Provost of the College who recently
assumed office.
In a chat with the new Provost, Prince Nwafor-Orizu , who spoke about
the place of the institution in both historical and academic
achievements of his father, noted that it was crucial to identify with
every single monument that gives a strong reminder of whom the late
icon was and what he meant to the larger society.
Prince Orizu commended Governor Willie Obiano for his passion for
education, infrastructural development and for contracting the
completion of the walling of the school and ongoing tarring of roads
within the campus.
He also thanked the Governor for appointing an illustrious son of
Nnewi, Chief Cletus Ibeto, as the Chairman, Governing Council of the
Institution.
He also commended the Provost for her vision towards the establishment
of Nwafor Orizu Museum, which he said will support policies and activities in the school by involving friends of his father in Nigeria and diaspora towards the development of the institution.
According to him, that will begin with the upcoming Nwafor Orizu
Memorial Lecture, as a way of rebuilding consciousness and contributing to the institution’s growth.
Also speaking, Comrade Innocent Nduanya, the Vice President, National Youth Councilof Nigeria, NYCN, and Honourable Tony Uche – Ezekwelu, who were in the
entourage of the visitor , described the Late Nwafor Orizu as a great
Nigerian who gave Ndi Igbo a global voice, pledging to follow-up with
their supports for the growth of the College.
Responding, the Provost, Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe,
Doctor Ifeyinwa Osegbo, said it was a huge delight to have played host
to a direct descendant of Nwafor Orizu.
She added that the Institution, apart from its strong adherence to
quality learning, strives in building durable policies that reflect
the consciousness and vision of the Late Nnewi Icon.
Also in the entourage was major youth stakeholders in Anambra State,
including the Chairman National Youth Council Anambra State, Comrade
Samuel Egwuatu, among others.
