The Surveyor General of Anambra State, Mr. Ifeanyi Ajoku has presented
their findings, into the Enugu-Ukwu, Ukpo, Abagana, Enugu-Agidi and
Nawfia communal crisis to the Administrative Panel of Inquiry in
charge of the matter in Awka.
The panel had requested the committee to professionally survey and
identify official demarcations to the boundaries.
Prior to the commencement of the days proceeding, the Chairman of the
Panel, retired Justice Chinyere Anigbogu requested the Secretary of
the Panel, Comrade Nwabufo Nwankwo to read out terms of reference
given the committee.
Receiving the documents from the state Surveyor General, Justice
Anigbogu commended Governor Willie Obiano for his financial support
that helped the Surveyor General and his team to do a wonderful job.
Justice Anigbogu further told the panel and other participants that it
is not in their powers to discuss the findings of the Surveyor General
as it is a technical job.
He said their assignment is to receive his report, study it carefully
and make appropriate recommendations to the state government for an
onward action that would eventually lead to a peaceful resolution of
the crisis that has lingered for many decades.
Handing over the documents of their findings to the Chairman of the
Panel, Surveyor Ajoku said that they went very far in seeking for
references and records, so that at the end of their assignment,
whatever they would be handing over to the panel would be empirical,
that even if it will be subjected to further verifications, it will
pass allowable accuracy in the survey profession.
The Surveyor General of the State further told the Panel that they
went as far as bringing out a survey done by a white man named S.R.J
Kingston on the sixth of November, 1923 to help enrich their findings.
He regretted that they had pockets of challenges during monumenting of
Mile Sixteen.
The Managing Director, Awka Capital Territory Development Authority,
Venerable Amaechi Okwuosa and the Anambra State Commander, National
Drug Law Enforcement Agency Mr. Sule Momodu who are members of the
panel equally appealed to the parties in the land dispute to give
peace a chance, owing to the number of years the matter has lingered.
Justice Anigbogu in the same vein has appealed to Ukpo, Ukwulu and
Abba to go back and study the Supreme Court judgment which caused some
protests recently very well and abide by it.
The judge said that the supreme court stated it categorically, that
the judgment is unenforceable, and as such, their lawyers have to come
together and advise them on the way forward rather than engaging in
crisis.
