More concerned Nigerians are joining the call for restructuring of the country to protect the future of the nation.
A onetime Chairman Awka North Local Government Area, Elder Nnanna Egwu joined in the call at Awka, during a book launch titled, “Restructuring Nigeria’s Unworkable Federal Structure: A Compendium on the Imperative of Fiscal Federalism in Nigeria”.
The book is authored by Mr. Polycarp Onwubiko, a practicing journalist in Awka.
Elder Egwu, in an opening remark, said that restructuring Nigeria has become imperative given the current situation in the country, which include, insecurity, economic and political instability and disunity among others.
He faulted the 1999 constitution enacted by the military as the major cause of the country’s divided interests and called on the Executive Arm of government to convoke a National Conference to implement restructuring of governance in Nigeria, which according to him was President Muhammadu Buhari’s major campaign promises.
The book reviewer, Professor Frank-Collins Okafor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka however noted that restructuring is a constitutional matter and cannot be achieved by the Executive Arm of government alone.
Earlier, the Vice Chancellor Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Professor Charles Esimone, represented by the Director of Information, Public Relations and Protocol, Dr Emma Ojukwu, urged the electorate to continue with the demand for restructuring, stressing that the legislature should be responsible for taking the burden of people they represent to the national platform.
In a speech, the Author of the book, Mr. Polycarp Onwubiko, said that his experience and extensive readings of political events inspired him into writing the book and re-echoed that for Nigeria to take her place in the comity of civilized and development oriented countries, it has to go back to true federalism.
Others who spoke at the event, including the Anambra State Council Chairman of NUJ, Sir Emmanuel Ifesinachi and the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Anambra Newspapers and Printing Corporation, Sir Chuka Nnabuife, commended the author for choosing the title, which they said, has opened another intellectual avenue for discourse on the particular way forward, adding that the content of the book is recommended for everybody.
