Anambra State Government is intensifying efforts towards improving rice production in the state as the new Commissioner for Agriculture Mr. Onukwuba embarks on inspection of the major rice mills across the state.
The inspection, targeted at assessing the activities of rice farmers and rice mills and proffer solutions to their challenges, will invariably, boost rice production to meet with the demands of the citizens.
The inspection of the rice mills and farms began at Coscharis farm site Anaku, to Udoka rice mill, to Josan giant mill Umumbo and terminates at the Anambra State Seed multiplication center Umumbo, known as Zee Seeds Nigeria Limited.
Speaking on the essence of the inspection, the Anambra State Commissioner for Agriculture Mr. Nnamdi Onukwuba stated it will ensure that the challenges facing rice production in the state are resolved while promising the availability of good seeds, processing, preservation and provision of market.
He said that the inspection once completed will help in directing the action plan of the state government towards enhancing rice production in the state.
Earlier while receiving the commissioner, the General Manager, Coscharis farm limited Mr. Bharat Bhushan Dhir and that of Josan Farm, Mr. Oliver Okeke who lauded the state government for the impressive support provided for rice farmers in the state assured that they will continue to collaborate with the state government in ensuring that quality and stone free rice is be made available to Ndi Anambra at affordable cost.
They further identify inadequate land for planting, lack of water for proper irrigation, flooding and access roads as their major challenges.
The Chairman, Udoka Processing Group Anaku, who received the Commissioner, commended Governor Willie Obiano for his continuous support through the Value Chain, assuring of greater commitment.
Correspondent Valentine Mbadugha reports that among the Commissioner’s entourage were the Special Adviser on Mechanization Mr. Paul Nwosu, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Agriculture, Stephanie Kerri-Uzo, Fadama State Programme Coordinator, Mr. Chuks Egbue as well as his value chain counterpart Mr. Nnamdi Agwuncha.
