Anambra State Government has ordered those engaging in the construction of illegal structures in the State to remove them immediately to avoid sanctions.
The General Manager Anambra State Physical Planning Board, Mr Victor
Okpoko gave the order following the board’s demolition of an illegal
perimeter fence under the high tension cable, along the Club Road
Awka, formerly Abakaliki Street.
Staff of the Board were seen with caterpillar and other equipment, pulling down the fence.
The fence, it was gathered, is impeding the free flow of flood water.
According to Mr Okpoko, the move became necessary after the developer
had exhausted the deadline given to him to remove the structure on his own.
He further explained that by building the perimeter fence, the
developer endangered his life and that of his neighbours.
The General-Manager explained that the action is in-tandem with
Governor Willie Obiano’s mandate to control development to ensure the
safety of life and property of the citizenry.
In his reaction, an indigene of the area , Mr Chukwudi Muotoh, commended the State government for doing the needful, and explained that years back, the
area had been swampy, until a hotel developer came to the area and
helped to control the water.
The site Manager of the hotel under construction, Mr Kenechukwu
Muodozie said that the developer heeded Governor Obiano’s Aku Luo Uno
Call by building the hotel, and explained that it took so lot of resources to close
up the swampy area, only for someone to block the flood channel which
he described as a threat to life and property of residents of the
area
