Rotary Club of Onitsha East, District 9142 has taken a sensitization campaign against Hepatitis B and C to Nsugbe community in  Anambra East  Council Area.


The campaign tagged “Hepatitis Zero World Eradication Project” was aimed at sensitizing the people on the dangers of  deadly virus as well as create a data base for those with and without the virus in order to achieve total eradication.
Correspondent, Emengini Osabede reports that  during the sensitization programme,  over two hundred people both young and old  were screened for Hepatitis B and C free of cost  and provided the people the opportunity to know their status.


Speaking in an interview, the connect President, Rotary Club of Onitsha East, District 9142, Rotarian Lilian Onyenyionwu noted that the free screening exercise is simultaneously taking place across the country with the aim of eradicating Hepatitis B and C from the surface of the earth. 
In their separate speeches, an Associate Professor and medical practitioner, Professor Fabian Chukwuezie and a member of Rotary Club Onitsha East, Professor Rotarian Jideofor Orakwe noted that Hepatitis B and C are more infectious and deadlier than HIV due to it’s small molecular weight and effect on the Liver.
They  listed body to body contact with infected person either through intercourse, use of sharp objects, from mother to child transmission, blood transfusion among others as mode of transmission pointing out that Hepatitis B is incurable but could be managed while C is curable. 


The past Assistant Governor of the club, Rotarian Uche Apakama said the club is set to achieving zero tolerance for Hepatitis throughout the world which having the data of infected and non infected persons is the first step while providing counseling and help to those infected for proper management.
Some of the beneficiaries including Messrs Uchenna Ndukwe, Felicia Onwugbufo and Harriet Okoye expressed joy and gratitude to Rotary Club for the free screening and prayed God to bless them.
