Today is Nigeria democracy day. The day is celebrated annually since May 29, 1999 to commemorate the restoration of democracy in the country after decades of military regime that began in 1966 and had been interrupted only by a brief period of democracy from 1979 to 1983.
The end of military rule brought about new era of regular elections as well as return of civil liberties, free press and end of arbitrary arrest and torture.
The federal government has declared tomorrow, a public holiday to mark the day.
Many Nigerians see the holiday as an opportunity to celebrate democracy and basic human rights in view of the struggles and sacrifices on the long path towards democracy.
