Anambra State House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging
Governor Willie Obiano to direct the Ministry of Environment to
encourage landlords in the state to construct covered catchment pits
in their premises to minimize heavy flooding on the roads.
The resolution was sequel to a motion sponsored to that effect by the
member representing Njikoka Two Constituency, Dr. Pete Ibida during
yesterday’s plenary.
House of Assembly Correspondent, Chukwuemeka Modilim was there and reports that based on Section Twenty of the 1999 Constitution as amended, which provides that the protection and improvement of the environment is a fundamental objective of the state, Dr. Ibida sponsored the motion.
The Lawmaker lamented that landlords build water channels from their
compounds, emptying the water into the roads thereby causing
devastation on roads, houses and farmlands.
In their contributions, the Chairman, House Committee on Information,
Culture and Tourism, Honourable Okechukwu Okoye, his Anambra East and
Idemili South Constituencies counterparts, Chief Obinna Emeneka and
Honourable Chuka Ezenwune respectively spoke in favour of the motion.
The Deputy Speaker, Dr. Paschal Agbodike, who presided over the
plenary, added that the resolution if implemented would arrest the
devastating effects of heavy flooding in the state.
Also at plenary, the House passed another resolution urging Governor
Willie Obiano to direct the Commissioner for Transport and Anambra
state Traffic Management Agency to urgently decongest the Oko -Umunze
road, particularly around the Federal Polytechnic, Oko and as well
direct public transporters to use the Orumba North local government
public park to avoid loading along the road .
The member representing Orumba North Constituency, Honourable Emeka
Aforka who sponsored the motion explained that there will be free flow
of traffic for motorists and pedestrians if the road is decongested.
In their contributions, the Chairman, House Committee on Information,
Culture and Tourism, Honourable Okechukwu Okoye, and his Nnewi North
Constituency counterpart, Honourable Nonso Okafor noted that if the
road is decongested, it will reduce the rate of accident.
The member representing Anaocha one Constituency, Honourable Ebele
Ejiofor and his Aguata one counterpart, Honourable Carter Umeh also
stressed the need for the Executive Arm of government to do the
needful.
