The need for Local Government Councils to take ownership of all the European Union and UNICEF assisted projects as well as upgrade the Water Sanitation and Hygiene Unit to a Department has been advocated.
This formed the crux of discussion when the delegation from European Union ,UNICEF and Federal Ministry of Water Resources Abuja, visited Nnewi North for inspection, monitoring and implementation of WASH program instituted in the area.


Correspondent Amaka Chibuzor Okoye reports that the European Union and UNICEF projects are basically provision of water schemes, sanitation facilities and hygiene implementation towards improving the health status of the citizenry.


Briefing the Transition Committee Chairman, Nnewi North, Prince Chukwudi Orizu, the Program Coordinator for European Union and the leader of Anambra delegation, Mrs Kate Kanebi said their mission is a joint effort to ensure that Anambra state meets the Sustainable Development Goal through improving the water service delivery.


She said they improved the capacity of Local Government staff to get them acquainted with all information on WASH sector so as to deliver good services to the beneficiaries.


The Transition Committee Chairman, Prince Chukwudi said that the Council had ensured that all the communities involved see the projects as their own so as to maintain and sustain it.


The Desk Officer of the Federal Ministry of National Planning and Budget Office, Abuja Mr Azubike Ikem, disclosed that UNICEF might soon round off the projects or extend them , urging the chairman to lay a very good foundation for the projects and ensure their sustainability.


For the WASH Desk Officer, Nnewi North, Mr Valentine Onuorah, the council embraced the interventions since 2006 and they have constructed about one thousand five hundred and eighty three latrines in order to promote Open Defecation Free and commended the state and donors for all their support.


The team later inspected Umuele Community Umudim, Nnewi and other projects within the council
