This year’s International Youth Day celebration has come and gone with a charge on Anambra youths to take advantage of the agric intervention programmes by the government to become self reliant.


The celebration which took place at the Dr. Alex Ekwueme square in Awka, attracted Governor Willie Obiano, top government functionaries, Anambra and non Anambra youths as well as music maestros.

The State farmers and hawkers recorded brisk businesses as the venue was filled to capacity with so many group stands.


Expressing joy over the celebration, a farmer from Ayamelum local government area, who specialized in seed rice production after a five month training at International Institute for Tropical Agriculture Ibadan by the Federal Government-IFAD- VCDP, Mr. Fidelis Onyia, called on other youths to embrace agriculture.


Another youth, Miss Uju Okafor, who was trained by the Federal Government-IFAD-VCDP on the production of different recipes with rice flower, urged them to take up any of the Agric value chain and specialize on same.
For Mr Chidi Okpala, a cassava stem multiplication farmer from Awgbu and Mrs Uju Nwankwor a yellow cassava recipe producer from Ndiokpalaeze, both in Orumba North Local Government Area, said with youth involvement in agriculture, Nigeria will achieve food security.


They however appealed to government at all levels to develop more lands, provide tractors, farm implements, agro chemicals, organic fertilizer and other inputs to farmers.
