The seven hundred and seventy –four Local government Areas in the country under the aegis of the Association of Local Governments of Nigerian, ALGON, have demanded thirty- five percent of the federal allocation as the review of the revenue sharing Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal commission begins soon.
The Association, therefore rejected the twenty-three percent proposed for the local governments by governors.
The Local Government, a s the third tier of government , currently gets twenty point sixty percent from the federal allocation.
It was gathered that governors of the thirty- six states of Nigeria said they would demand forty- two percent as against their current twenty- six point seventy- two percent , while proposing that the federal government’s share be slashed from fifty- two point sixtyeight percent to thirty- seven percent and the local government’s share be increased from twenty- point sixty percent to twenty- three per cent.
The National President of ALGON, Mr. David Alabi, in an interaction with newsmen noted that their thirty- five percent demand has become imperative following the huge responsibilities carried out by the councils.
