The Building Collapse Committee set up by Governor Willie Obiano to look into the remote and immediate causes of the collapsed building at No 36 Ogalaonye Street, Onitsha, have concluded its report and presented same to the Governor.

The presentation was made at the Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia.
While briefing newsmen on behalf of the Committee shortly after a closed door meeting with the Governor, the Chairman of the Committee and Traditional ruler of Uke, Igwe Charles Agbala said that they discovered that most structural drawings around Onitsha and Nnewi areas, are defective as registered engineers were not used.

Among other recommendations, the committee recommended a direct relationship between developers and relevant building regulatory bodies, at all critical stages of the building.

Igwe Agbala who said that other recommendations are contained in the report submitted to the Governor, pointed out that because the structural drawings are defective, approvals are usually defective, stressing that approvals and supervisions should be made, pursuant to the State Physical Planning Board Law of 2013 as amended in 2016.

The Committee recommended that approval should not take the place of supervision atl different building stages , adding that it should only be used to supervise the building, while the supervisor should sign approval of all critical stages in the paper, noting that that if their recommendations are implemented, it would serve as a deterrent to others.
Secretary of the Committee, Mr Nwabufo Nwankwo, among others, were also present during the presentation.

Recall that a building at No 36 Ogalonye Street, Onitsha under construction on May twenty second collapsed and trapped seven people, out of which three people were confirmed dead by the doctor, according to the police report released to the public.
