A two storey building at Nkisi Aroli in Onitsha, has collapsed after the heavy down pour of Wednesday.
It was a pathetic situation though no casualty was recorded.

Speaking to the ABS in an interview, the Chairman, Nigeria Institute of Town Planners, Anambra State Chapter, Mr. Maduakona Amaechina who described the incident as unfortunate, sympathized with the occupants over the total loss of their properties.

Mr. Amaechina said flooding caused the weak structural support and underground seepage which led to the collapse of the two story building with six flats.
He appealed to State Government to come to the aid of the tenants who totally lost all their belongings and are now homeless.

Another Town Planner Mr. Ben Okoye, disclosed that the drainage system was built since 1983 under the leadership of Senator Jim Nwobodo which started at Slaughter to Nkisi River, where the collapsed building is located, and therefore need serious maintenance, otherwise it will affect other nearby buildings, because the already built culverts are weak due to the volume of water that pass through it .

Narrating his Ordeal, one of the occupants of the building, Mr.
Ifeanyi Oputa said tenants lost all their properties including money and now have no home appealing for state government’s intervention.

Adding his voice, another tenant, Mr. Thomas Odimfere, estimated their losses to over Fifty Million naira, excluding the two story building and solicited for urgent assistance from both spirited individuals and government.
