A three-storey building under construction has collapsed at Ifite Awka
near Nnamdi Azikiwe University gate, Awka South local government Area.

There was, however, no casualty.

The structure, located off Nnamdi Azikiwe University school road, was
said to have collapsed in the early hours of yesterday.

On arrival at the site, it was discovered that the site has been
sealed off by the response team of Awka Capital Territory Development
Authority ACTDA.

Workers engaged in construction work in an adjoining building with
cracks were also told to stop work until necessary assessments on
building plans are completed.

Speaking to the ABS at the  the scene of the incident, the Managing
Director of ACTDA, Venerable Barrister Amaechi Okwuosa blamed the
collapse on the preliminary stage of the building which the agency
issued a warning notice to the said developer which fell on deaf ears,
thanking God that no lives were lost.

Venerable Barrister Okwuosa stated categorically that in line with the
state government law, the developer will lose the property to the
state government including the land and urged developers to stop
cutting corners or employing unqualified engineers in handling such a
huge investment.
