Blocked drainages around spare parts market Onitsha have been desilted by the State Ministry of Environment in collaboration with the Onitsha South Local Government Area.

The desilted gutter was filled to the brim with debris of sand and waste, which prevented free flow of water thereby causing repulsive odour from the stagnant water.

ABS observed that there were receptacle bins at the area which have not been well utilized by residents and shop owners.
Speaking during the sanitation exercise, the Transition Committee Chairman of Onitsha South Local Government Area, Mr. Emeka Asoanya, remarked that it was important to keep the environment clean hence the regular excavation of debris to ensure free flow of
water.

He urged residents and traders in the area to join hands in keeping the environment clean warning that those who contravene the environmental law will be dealt with.

The Director of Environment and Ecology of the Ministry, Mr. Anthony Odiegwu and the Coordinator of ‘Dobe Anambra Ocha‘ programme for Anambra North, Mr. Bombery Obi-Okoye said cleaning of environment is important to drive home the need for a healthy environment, as the state government has been supportive on issues of maintaining clean environment.

Some traders in the area including Mr. Paul Nwaonye and Mrs. Agbomma Onwumelu, commended the gesture of desilting the gutters but pointed out that the factors causing the blocked drainage should be tackled, and frowned at those with the attitude of blocking the drainage with debris instead of making use of the provided waste receptacles.
