In commemoration of World Contraception Day, the Anambra State Government in conjunction with The Challenge Imitative (TCI) have organized a one day awareness creation on Family Planning in Nnewi.


The event which was held at the Local Government Headquarter s of Nnewi North, had women and men and other relevant stakeholders, as well as the traditional ruler of Nnewi, Igwe Kenneth Orizu the third in attendance.


The World Contraception Day celebrated on the twenty sixth of September annually, was launched in 2007, and its aim is to improve awareness of all contraceptives methods available, and also to enable young people to make informed choices on their sexual and reproductive health.


Speaking during the sensitization and awareness creation, the Anambra State Family Planning Coordinator, Mrs. Stella Ekweozor, who said that family planning is an integral part of woman’s health, noted that they are using the event to teach couples what they need to know about family planning.


Mrs. Ekweozor continued by saying that family planning among other things, help families to do child spacing, enhance healthy living of mothers, reduce poverty and revealed that there are natural and artificial planning which are safe and made it clear that all family planning methods are free.


The State Director of Public Health, Dr. Uchechukwu Onyejimbe, stressed the need for couples to embrace family planning, as it has a tremendous benefit, even as he said that the Anambra state government is working tirelessly to reduce mother and child mortality to the barest minimum.


For the traditional ruler of Nnewi, Igwe Kenneth Orizu, he adopted and enjoyed family planning, which is why he is able to train all his children academically up to the university level, and urged participants to embrace it.


According to Mrs. Onyedikachi Ewe, who is a demand generation technical support expert of the Challenge Initiative (TCI), they are supporting the Anambra State government in demand generation, and as well support the capacity of the state to implement high impact health interventions that will improve the health indices of Anambra State.


Mrs. Stella Ekweozor and Dr. Uchechukwu Onyejimbe had earlier visited Okpuno Otolo Nnewi Primary Health Centre, where women were given being giving free family planning services.


The theme for the 2019 world contraception day is “it is your life, it is your responsibility”.
