Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, has held her fiftieth Inaugural lecture which has its theme as, “Kolanut in Igbo Metaphysics: A Phenomernalysical Research Into Its Sympolismic Universe.
The Inaugural lecturer was Reverend Father Professor Bona Christus Umeogu.
The lecture held at the University’s auditorium, attracted traditional rulers, stakeholders in Education sector as well as other personalities.
Education Correspondent, Theophilus Ukoha, was there and reports that in his opening remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Charles Esimone, said it is the tradition of the university for Professors to show case their research work and present same in a way that not just their colleagues will understand it but the common man.
The Vice Chancellor who described the Inaugural lecturer, Reverend Father Umeogu as a golden personality, said his research work on Kolanut will surely meet community service and requirement.
Reverend Father Professor Umeogu in his Inaugural lecture tagged Golden Inaugural lecture, said Kolanut is the heart of Igbo people.
While discussing the essential nature and supernature of the Kolanut, Reverend Father Umeogu said Kolanut came from the tropical and subtropical rainforest of Africa and other continents but migrated through culture into Igbo world hence Ndi Igbo separated the Kolanut from profane use and dedicated it to sacred use.
He explained that Kolanut contains ingredients that stimulates, sustains and services the human body, adding that it has distinguished roles to play in Igbo land hence Ndigbo use it in prayers and sacred communion between God and man.
Later in an interview, Reverend Father Patrick Bosah who represented the Archbishop of Onitsha Metropolitan Most Reverend Valerian Okeke, Professor Pita Ejiofor, traditional ruler of Isiagu, said that Kolanut ritual is a culture in Igbo land that should be respected.
In a vote of thanks, the chairman Inaugural lecture committee, Professor Richard Uwakwe, thanked all who graced the occasion.
