Anambra state Commissioner for Local Government Affairs Mr. Greg Obi has teamed with Environment Commissioner Mr. Obi Nwankwo to cleanup and evacuate debris inside drainages in Idemili North Council Area to achieve a clean and healthy environment.
The clean up exercise began from Afor Nkpor down to Iyienu mission hospital axis of Enugu/Onitsha old road.
Commenting on the exercise, the Commissioner for local government Affairs, Mr. Obi, said that bad roads occasioned by blocked drainages, flash floods and unhealthy environmental practices necessitated the charge by the Governor Willie Obiano for the drainages to be cleared to reduce such menace.
Speaking in the same vein, the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Nwankwo and the Managing Director of the newly created state Clear Drainage and Forest Preservation Agency, Mr. Chido Obidiegwu said that henceforth those who block drainage with waste and anything harmful to the environment will be prosecuted, while those arrested during the clean up exercise will be prosecuted before a mobile court.
The Transition Committee Chairman for Idemili North, Barrister Raphael Nnabuife commended the Governor for his support in ensuring that the drainages are cleared to maintain healthy environment for Ndi Anambra, assuring that the gesture will be sustained.
Correspondent Kenechukwu Chukwudi reports that other parts of the state visited by the team includes, Ogbaru, Onitsha North and South Local Government Areas among other places where offenders of environmental laws were arrested for arraignment before a mobile court.
